Former Wisconsin Badgers tight end Jack Pugh has died, leaving the Wisconsin football community and his hometown of Hilliard, Ohio, in mourning. The University of Wisconsin announced his passing Tuesday evening, remembering him as a beloved teammate, graduate, and friend whose kindness and spirit made a lasting impression on everyone around him.
In a statement, Wisconsin Athletics said, “The Wisconsin Athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh. Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff.” The university also noted that Pugh proudly earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2025.
Pugh came to Wisconsin as one of the nation’s top tight end prospects. A native of Hilliard, Ohio, he originally built his reputation as a standout basketball player before eventually turning his full attention to football. He later explained that he had grown tired of basketball and discovered a deeper passion for the game of football, which quickly became the sport he loved most.
During his time with the Badgers, Pugh appeared in one game before making the difficult decision to medically retire from football in December 2023. At the time, he spoke openly and courageously about his battle with depression, suicidal thoughts, and substance abuse. In an emotional message shared publicly, he said his decision to step away was driven by his mental health and not by football itself.
“Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness,” Pugh wrote. He also said that football had never been the cause of his struggles, but rather that he had spent years neglecting his mental well-being while focusing on everything else around him.
His honesty resonated with many people, especially fellow athletes facing similar struggles. By sharing his experience, Pugh became an advocate for mental health and showed others that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Friends, teammates, and fans are now remembering Jack not only as a gifted athlete, but as someone who deeply cared for others. He was known for his warmth, faith, and loyalty, and for bringing encouragement to those around him.
Though his life was far too short, Jack Pugh leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and hope. He will be remembered not just for what he accomplished on the field, but for the honesty and humanity he showed away from it.
